Visual Hierarchy · Page 6 of 7
Who do you listen to first?
Imagine your layout is a bustling family reunion, with relatives of all shapes and sizes clamoring for attention.

The four levels
Level 1: Headline
At the top of the hierarchy is Aunt Mildred, with her booming voice and dramatic stories. Like a headline, she commands everyone’s attention the moment she walks in. You can’t ignore Aunt Mildred.
Level 2: Subheadline
Cousin Eddie is the subheadline. He’s a sidekick, adding a bit of flair and organization to the chaos, pointing people to the buffet or announcing the talent show. He breaks things into manageable chunks.
Level 3: Body copy
Uncle Bob is your body text. He’s not as flashy as Aunt Mildred, but he’s dependable, giving all the details about who’s who and what’s what. He keeps things running smoothly.
Level 4: Fine print
Finally, the distant cousin nobody really knows, squeezed into the corner like the tiny disclaimer at the bottom of a poster. Part of the family, but easily overlooked. Like fine print: necessary, but not the focus.
